Stakelum's Renovation of a Historic Site for Irish Rail

The Client

Our esteemed client for this project was none other than Irish Rail, a renowned and established Irish organization providing employment to nearly 4000 individuals. It was an honour to collaborate with them on such a unique project. Our project was the renovation of an old underground building in Connolly Station, a historic site in Dublin featuring exquisite stonework and original buildings dating back to 1844. The underground area was once home to some famous nightclubs, adding a fascinating dimension to the project. If only the walls could talk! As a team, we felt privileged to be part of preserving the cultural heritage of this building and restoring this iconic landmark to be repurposed to something that would require a little less dancing.
Preserving Cultural Heritage with Sustainable and Modern Design

The Brief

Our client was extremely conscious of availing of a range of office furniture that respected the history of the building yet nodded towards the future. Furniture plays an essential role in the design & function of any building & is particularly important when considering a historic build. When providing office furniture in a historical building such as Irish Rails building in Connolly station it was critical to respect the buildings history & architectural features while incorporating a modern design. Another key aspect when discussing possible office furniture solutions was to take into account peoples working habits post covid. Breakout areas, correct spacing & flexible work stations are all key features of office furniture post covid.

The Process

When it comes to any office furniture installation, Stakelum takes great care in planning and executing projects to ensure a seamless process. Prior to installation, the head of the Stakelum installation team, Pat, and Managing Director, Conor, conducted a thorough scope and walkthrough of the building numerous weeks before the install. From there, a plan was illustrated to carry out the installation over a 48-hour period with a team of 7 Stakelum Office Installation members.

The project kicked off at 6:30 am on a fresh October morning. The initial challenge was offloading the container, which was safely maneuvered by the team using a teleporter, despite the busy congestion in the city of Dublin. After a quick induction and inspection from the sight manager, the team got to work unpacking and carefully lifting the furniture pieces into the main building.

Stakelum takes great pride in their environmental practices and ensured that plastics waste and cardboard were carefully separated during the process & loaded back into vans where it was brought back home for recycling. In recognition of their sustainability efforts, Stakelum has recently been awarded all three ISO certificates.

With over 30 years of experience, the team swiftly assembled the furniture to complete the installation project, showcasing their expertise and commitment to quality work.
